AYEYARWADDY DIVISION
On the western side of the Ayeyarwaddy Division are
Andaman Sea and Bay of Bangal. It has a monsoon climate. Bamar and Kayin
nationals form the majority of the population. Fishary business is
important in the Ayeyarwaddy Division. The principal crop cultivated is
paddy.
PATHEIN
Pathein, situated on the bank of Pathein River is the
capital of Ayeyarwaddy Division, 190 km. west of Yangon. It is
surrounded by a major rice-growing area that produce the best rice in
Myanmar. The population of Pathein includes large number of Kayin and
Rakhine in addition to Myanmar. It is famous for its colourful
hand-painted umbrellas. Most of the umbrellas made in Pathein are
actually parasols; that is why they are not waterproof, but are used as
a defence against the sun. Shinmokhtaw Pagoda is in the centre of the
town.

CHAUNG THA BEACH
West of Pathein, on the Bay of Bengal coast,
Chaungtha Beach is much better than Letkokkon near Yangon. It is muddy
at low tide and it is attractive at medium and high tide. The Beach is
backed by coconut plams and casuarina trees and located 40 km. west of
Pathein.
NGWESAUNG BEACH
Ngwesaung Beach is a newly opened beach about 48 km
from Pathein. This unspoilt beach streches 15 km of white sand and blue
sea. There are newly constructed bungalows with local flavour equirpped
with modern facilities.
