Rakhine
Rakhine State is in the western - most part of the
country. Bordering with Chin State in the north and facing the Bay of
Bengal in the west, it is a tripical mousoon region. Annual rainfall is
203 inches at Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State. Rakhines, Bamar and
Chin are inhalited. Mrauk-U, an ancient royal town, is rich in
interesting historical sites. Such as pagoda and cultural edifices and
antiques.
SITTWE
Sittwe, above known as Akyals, is the capital of
Rakhine State. It is situated on the month of Kaladan River. The city
started as a trading port around 200 years ago and further developed
after the Britsh occupation in 1826. An old steel clock tower in the
centre of the town was erected by the Dutch is the 18th century. The
point is a projection at the confluence of Kalandan , Bay of Bengal.
Rakhine Cultural Museum has a large collection of Wethal and Mrauk -U
period articacts.
MRAUK-U
Mrauk-U or Mro-haung, as it is sometimes called, is a
18th century ancient city of Rakhine Kingdom and is known for its
temples with wall paintings of Indian cultural influence. Altogether
there are around 70 tamples, stupa or city wall sits around Mrauk-U.
Walls and gateways are all that left of Mrauk-U royal palace. A museum
has a good collection of religions sculptures and other antifacts
unearthed around Mrauk-U. The most complex and well preserved of the
surviving temples is Shittaung Pagoda constructed in 1535 AD. Andaw
pagoda is believed to be enshrined a peice of tooth relic. DukkaneThein
is said to have been built in 1571 AD. There are 146 Buddha niches at
Dukkha Thein. One of the famous pagodas in Myanmar, the Mahamuni Shrine
is situated 30 km from Mrauk-U.
NGALAPI BEACH
Ngapali, one of the beautiful beaches in Myanmar, is
located on the Rakhine coast near Thandwe ( Sandaway ). This unspoilt
beach with swaying palm and casuarinas is a good place to relex. With a
bicycle, are can tour several of the fishing villages nearly. There is
an 18 hole Golf Course located 15 minute drive from the Beach.
